Artificial Grass & Winter Weather

Does winter weather affect artificial grass and what needs to be done to protect it?

Luckily for our low-country locations, snow and ice aren’t a significant concern, but for our northern regions the question gets asked- how does artificial turf hold up in the winter months? The answer is simple- it’s just fine!

Artificial turf is durable and resilient against many weather conditions. From sunlight, to rain, and even heavy snow, your artificial turf is designed to withstand the elements.  Here are some commonly asked questions on what to expect during the winter months with artificial grass.

Will frost harm my artificial grass?

No, frost will not damage the artificial grass. Like most surfaces dealing with frost, the artificial grass may get slippery when ice is present, so it’s important to take care when walking over artificial turf with frost or ice. Typically, artificial grass will spring back up once the frost and ice have melted, but if needed you can take a broom to broom up the fibers if they’re matted down after a long ice.

Do I need to cover my artificial grass before snow or ice storms?

No, this is not necessary. Your artificial grass is durable enough to withstand harsh winter conditions.

Is there any preparation needed to prepare my artificial grass for winter?

Winter preparation for artificial grass is fairly straightforward. Make sure you do a good fall clean-up, removing any branches, sticks, leaves, and pine needles from your artificial grass.  Keeping debris off the grass before a heavy snowfall is the best way to protect the turf and ensure longevity for years to come.

Will heavy snow harm my artificial grass?

Snow shouldn’t have a big impact on your artificial grass. It is okay to play and walk on snow that is ontop of your turf. The blades may mat down under the weight of the snow, but usually springs back up naturally once the sun is able to hit the turf fibers again. On rare occasions, you may need to broom or power broom the blades in the spring to help spring the blades back up.

Can I shovel snow off the artificial grass?

This is not recommended as shovels often have sharp edges that can damage the turf. For areas that need snow removed, you can take a handheld blower and blow off debris or snow as much as possible, and then let the sun do its work.

Can I use salt or ice melt on my artificial grass?

We do not recommend using salt or ice melt chemicals on your artificial turf. These products can be corrosive and create degradation in the backing system of the artificial turf, as well as cause discolorations on the turf fibers.
