How Well Does Artificial Turf Drain?
Artificial Grass and Drainage
Flooding rains and standing water is a common issue on the coast, leaving many homeowners trying to figure out drainage for their yards. It may surprise you to hear that artificial turf actually drains better than natural grass.
The backing on the turf is permeable and is designed to drain at a rate of up to 1,200 inches per hour- more than enough to handle the Georgia monsoons.Ā Additionally, during a flood, natural grass often gets too much water killing the grass and making a mud pit for days. With artificial grass, even with the heaviest of rains, the grass will remain green and mud free!

Sub-base Preparation Matters
While the backing on artificial grass drains well, the installation method is also incredibly important. The water draining through the turf still needs somewhere to go, and if your base layer cannot handle the volume of water, you will continue to have problems. Our certified installers create a base layer by removing 2″-4″ of the existing area sod, grass, and weeds, then replacing it with 2″-3″ of 57-stone and 1″-2″ of crushed granite. This sub-base layer for artificial grass allows for better drainage than existing soil.Ā Ensure you hire a properly licensed artificial grass installation team and discuss any drainage issues with them prior to installation.

Flooding Happens
There are limits to everything and artificial grass can’t guarantee your yard will never flood. There are several factors that impact flooding such as neighborhood and city planning or where you’re located in relation to the water table. Those living on the coast understand tides and hurricane rains can be unpredictable. In these cases, little can help with flooding. However, artificial grass drains better than natural grass and can be a solution for your yard if you deal with standing water and mud after every rainstorm.
